The Congress party on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and called for the disbanding of the National Testing Agency (NTA) amid the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 examination. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that the NTA has lost credibility and must be dissolved.
Congress's Allegations and Demands
Addressing a press conference, Ramesh alleged that the NTA, under Pradhan's oversight, has mismanaged the exam, leading to widespread irregularities. He said, "The NTA has failed in its mandate. The minister must take responsibility and resign. The agency should be disbanded and a new body formed to conduct such exams." The Congress also accused the government of compromising the integrity of the examination system.
Background of the NEET-UG Controversy
The NEET-UG 2024 exam, conducted on May 5, saw over 24 lakh candidates appearing. However, reports of paper leaks, grace marks, and result discrepancies have sparked protests across the country. The CBI is currently investigating the alleged malpractices. The Supreme Court has also taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and is hearing petitions seeking a re-test.
Political Reactions and Government Response
Several opposition parties have joined the Congress in demanding action. The government, however, has defended the NTA and Pradhan, stating that the investigation is underway and those responsible will be punished. Union Minister Pradhan has not yet commented on the resignation demand.
The controversy has intensified ahead of the upcoming state elections, with the Congress using it to attack the Modi government on education policy and governance.
