The INDIA bloc is facing internal tensions as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) has questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's recent gesture of hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament. The CPI(M) state secretary in Kerala, M.V. Govindan, asked why Rahul Gandhi can embrace PM Modi but not Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also a key ally in the opposition alliance.
Background of the Controversy
During the ongoing Parliament session, Rahul Gandhi was seen hugging PM Modi while discussing the no-confidence motion against the government. This act was perceived by many as a gesture of political civility, but it has sparked criticism from within the opposition ranks. The CPI(M) has taken strong exception, viewing it as a sign of ideological dilution and a betrayal of the opposition's unity against the BJP-led central government.
CPI(M)'s Stance
M.V. Govindan stated, "If Rahul Gandhi can hug PM Modi, why can't he hug Pinarayi Vijayan? This selective behavior raises questions about the sincerity of the INDIA bloc's unity." He further alleged that the Congress party has been avoiding direct engagement with the CPI(M) in Kerala, where both parties are rivals in the state political landscape.
The CPI(M) has been a crucial partner in the INDIA bloc, formed to challenge the BJP in the 2024 general elections. However, state-level rivalries, particularly in Kerala and West Bengal, have often strained the alliance. The CPI(M) and Congress have been traditional adversaries in Kerala, with the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) competing for power.
Congress Response
Congress leaders have downplayed the controversy, stating that Rahul Gandhi's gesture was a simple act of parliamentary courtesy and not indicative of any political alignment. They urged the CPI(M) to focus on the larger goal of defeating the BJP rather than getting bogged down by minor incidents.
However, the CPI(M)'s remarks have exposed the underlying fissures within the INDIA bloc. Political analysts suggest that such public disagreements could weaken the opposition's narrative ahead of crucial state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Impact on INDIA Bloc
The incident has reignited debates about the cohesion of the INDIA bloc, which comprises over 20 opposition parties. While the alliance has managed to present a united front on several issues, internal differences over seat-sharing and ideological positions remain unresolved. The CPI(M)'s criticism of Rahul Gandhi may further complicate the alliance's dynamics, especially in states where the Congress and Left parties are direct competitors.
Meanwhile, the BJP has seized upon the controversy to highlight the opposition's disunity. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra remarked, "The INDIA bloc is falling apart even before the elections. Rahul Gandhi's hug to PM Modi shows that even the opposition knows the prime minister's popularity."
As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are on how the INDIA bloc manages these internal conflicts. The CPI(M) has demanded a clarification from Rahul Gandhi, while the Congress has called for unity. The coming days will reveal whether the alliance can overcome this rift or if it will deepen further.
