Delhi crime dips: Heinous offences down 8%, vehicle thefts drop 21%

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha on Thursday announced a significant reduction in major crimes across the national capital over the past year, attributing the improvement to technology-driven policing, enhanced police visibility, and focused crime-prevention strategies.

Overall crime statistics show marked improvement

Addressing the Delhi Police Commissionerate Day function, Golchha stated that heinous crimes have declined by 8 per cent compared to 2025, while offences registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have fallen by 12 per cent. Property-related crimes also recorded substantial declines: motor vehicle theft dropped by 21 per cent, and other thefts fell by 15 per cent—the lowest figures recorded in the past 10 years.

Women safety: 98% detection rate

Highlighting women's safety as a key priority, the Commissioner said crimes against women have reduced by nearly 17 per cent, with the detection rate reaching 98 per cent—one of the highest in the country. Nearly 95 per cent of such cases were charge-sheeted within the prescribed statutory time limit. He added that PCR calls related to robbery and snatching have also declined significantly due to increased police visibility and effective crime-control measures.

Swift investigations in sensitive cases

Golchha noted that Delhi Police has accelerated investigations in sensitive cases. During the current year, charge sheets were filed within two weeks in 35 POCSO cases and 172 street crime cases, reflecting a focus on swift investigation and prosecution.

Organised crime and firearm reduction

On organised crime, the Commissioner said Operation Gang Bust and action under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) have targeted not only criminals but also the networks providing logistical and financial support. As a result, the use of firearms in heinous crimes has declined by 27 per cent during the current year.

Anti-drug enforcement: 123 narcotics hotspots identified

Referring to the recently launched 2026-2029 Vision Document under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, unveiled during the 10th Apex-Level Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Commissioner said Delhi Police has identified 123 narcotics hotspots through scientific analysis to strengthen anti-drug enforcement across the city.
