Derek O'Brien Questions ED Over Temple Funds Amid TMC Accounts Freeze
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien on Friday questioned the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over its decision to freeze the party's bank accounts, demanding similar action against temple funds. The remarks came amid the opposition's demand for a judicial probe into the alleged financial irregularities in the Ram temple's donation management system.
In a tweet, O'Brien wrote, "ED freezes TMC's 3 bank accounts with HDFC. When will ED freeze temple funds?" The query highlights the perceived selective targeting by the central agency, which has been investigating the TMC in connection with the alleged West Bengal school jobs scam.
ED Action on TMC Accounts
The ED had earlier this week frozen three bank accounts of the Trinamool Congress held with HDFC Bank, citing proceeds of crime linked to the recruitment scam. The accounts reportedly contained around Rs 30 crore. The move has triggered a political firestorm, with the TMC accusing the BJP-led central government of using investigative agencies to harass political opponents.
According to sources, the ED's action is part of a broader probe into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers and staff in state-run schools in West Bengal. The agency has claimed that the TMC accounts were used to launder money obtained from illegal appointments.
Ram Temple Donation Controversy
Meanwhile, the opposition has been demanding a judicial inquiry into the management of donations for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Allegations have surfaced regarding lack of transparency in the collection and utilization of funds. The Ram Temple Trust has denied any wrongdoing, stating that all donations are accounted for and audited.
Derek O'Brien's tweet directly links the two issues, questioning why the ED has not taken similar action against temple fund managers. The TMC MP has been vocal in criticizing the central government's selective application of law.
Political Reactions
The freezing of TMC accounts has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties. The Congress and other opposition leaders have also questioned the ED's motives, calling it a misuse of power. The TMC has announced plans to challenge the ED order in court.
In response, the ED has maintained that its actions are based on evidence and are in accordance with the law. The agency has stated that the accounts were frozen to prevent further siphoning of funds.
As the political battle intensifies, Derek O'Brien's demand for equal treatment under the law has struck a chord with many who see the ED's actions as politically motivated. The controversy is likely to dominate the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.
