Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Applauds Union Budget 2026 as Pivotal for Vikasit Bharat Vision
In Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed strong support for the Union Budget 2026-27, describing it as a robust and decisive measure that propels India towards the ambitious goal of Vikasit Bharat. Speaking to journalists after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget, Fadnavis emphasized its strategic importance for Maharashtra, particularly in addressing the state's rapid urban growth.
Addressing Urbanisation Challenges with Planned Development
Fadnavis pointed out that growing urbanisation poses a significant challenge for Maharashtra, but the budget's focus on planned urbanisation for cities with populations exceeding five lakh is set to yield substantial benefits. This initiative is expected to enhance infrastructure, improve living standards, and foster sustainable urban expansion across the state.
Boosting Industry, Entrepreneurship, and Employment
The Chief Minister highlighted the budget's encouragement for industry and entrepreneurship, noting that robust measures for investment and employment generation lay a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth. He revealed that an investment of Rs 12 lakh crore has been allocated to the infrastructure sector, with additional substantial funds directed towards agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and irrigation to support rural development.
Empowering Women and Enhancing Healthcare
Building on the success of the Lakhpati Didi initiative, Fadnavis praised the proposal to create dedicated malls and industrial opportunities for women, calling it highly significant. He also welcomed plans for hostels for girl students pursuing higher education in every district, aiming to improve access and safety. Furthermore, the decision to start emergency medical services, including casualty and trauma centres, in district hospitals is anticipated to significantly boost the healthcare sector across Maharashtra.
Infrastructure Projects and Economic Growth Hubs
Fadnavis detailed key infrastructure projects that are expected to drive GDP growth, such as the Mumbai–Pune and Pune–Hyderabad high-speed corridors. Each Growth Hub will receive ₹5,000 crore over five years, benefiting regions including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune Metropolitan Region, and the Nagpur Metropolitan Growth Hub. He estimated that Maharashtra will benefit to the tune of Rs one lakh crore from the union budget, with specific allocations including:
- Rs 6103 crore for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor
- Rs 1702 crore for the Mumbai Metro
- Rs 462 crore for MUTP 3 among other projects
Leveraging Free Trade Agreements for Economic Advantage
In addition to the budget, Fadnavis noted that the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union will provide a major boost to Maharashtra's economy. The state leads in the manufacture of gems and jewellery, engineering tools, and textiles, positioning it to capitalize on enhanced trade opportunities and further solidify its industrial dominance.
