Nagpur: A major fire, suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit, wrecked the Kalmeshwar-Brahmani Municipal Council office early Wednesday, destroying key documents, furniture and electronic equipment and causing losses worth several lakhs of rupees.
The blaze was reported around 5am by night-shift employee Gunderao Kumre, who noticed flames inside the municipal council building and alerted the Kalmeshwar Fire Brigade. Firefighters rushed to the spot, but as the fire spread rapidly, additional assistance was sought from Wadi, Saoner, and Mohpa municipal councils.
Teams from the four fire stations battled the blaze for nearly three hours before bringing it under control around 8am.
Officials said office of the municipal council president was gutted while the adjoining establishment department, health department and inward-outward correspondence section also suffered extensive damage. Furniture, iron cupboards, fans, computers, and other office equipment were destroyed.
Several crucial departments escaped damage, including the property tax department, the accounts section, the birth and death registration wing, and the water supply department, along with records and documents of the construction department. Kalmeshwar police station in-charge Manoj Kalbande reached the spot with his team and oversaw security arrangements.
As news of the incident spread, MLA Ashish Deshmukh, BJP’s Rajiv Potdar, chief officer Akash Suradkar, municipal council president Avinash Makode, vice-president Dhanraj Devke, MSEDCL engineer Vishal Dhole and several councillors visited the site.
Suradkar inspected the affected premises and reviewed the status of records across departments. He appealed to citizens not to panic and announced that municipal services would resume on June 18 from Nagar Bhavan within the municipal council complex.
