A fire erupted in a five-storey residential building in Mansarovar Park, Shahdara, east Delhi, early on Sunday. Firefighters rescued nine trapped residents, including women and children, by placing ladders against balconies on various floors.
Rescue Operation Details
All nine individuals experienced breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation and were admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital under the supervision of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Madhu. None sustained burn injuries, and they were later discharged.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call about the blaze at 12:03 am. Four fire tenders were dispatched to the location. Firefighters launched a rescue operation and safely evacuated the residents: Ananya (12), Renu Garg (19), Prateek Garg (19), Tanishka Soni (19), Vanshika (20), Arun Garg (48), Durgesh (49), Yogesh Verma (50), and Raj Rani (65). They were transported to the hospital in ambulances.
Fire Control and Cause
The fire was brought under control by 12:40 am, and the entire operation concluded at 1:40 am. DFS officials stated that timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to the upper floors.
According to a police officer, the fire was triggered by a short circuit in a motor on the ground floor and spread through the parking area, where it remained confined. DFS officials noted that domestic items stored in the parking area caught fire, and thick smoke quickly spread through the building, trapping the nine residents.
Residents expressed relief at the swift response of the fire services, which averted a potential tragedy. The incident highlights the importance of electrical safety and fire prevention measures in residential buildings.
