In a significant political development, senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim has stepped down from his position as Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), a role he had held since November 2018. The announcement was made by TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, who confirmed that Hakim had formally requested party chairperson Mamata Banerjee to allow his resignation.
Reasons Behind the Resignation
According to Ghosh, Hakim believed that the state government was rendering the Kolkata Municipal Corporation ineffective, diminishing its role and authority. He sought a dignified exit from the post to avoid any further erosion of the institution's stature. Initially, Banerjee did not grant permission, but after an administrative meeting at Nabanna, the state secretariat, she approved his resignation.
Hakim's Political Background
Popularly known as Bobby, Firhad Hakim is a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Kolkata Port Assembly constituency. He is considered a close aide of Mamata Banerjee and has been a key figure in the TMC's urban governance strategy. His resignation marks a notable shift in the party's administrative lineup.
The TMC has not yet announced a successor for the mayor's post. Political analysts suggest that this move could be part of a broader reshuffle within the party's municipal leadership, aimed at revitalizing the KMC's functioning ahead of upcoming local elections.
