Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre Highlights Role of Traditional Fairs

Mandya: Forest minister Eshwar B Khandre said that traditional fairs, festivals and religious rituals play a vital role in revitalising culture and heritage while fostering social harmony.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Rajagopura and Basava Dwar at Halasalli Gavimatha in Malavalli taluk on Friday, where he noted that such occasions bring together families, relatives and communities, strengthening bonds and reinforcing shared values.

Recalling the contributions of medieval Kannada poet Sri Shadakshara Deva, Khandre said the saint's literary works in Sanskrit and Kannada enriched society, while the sacredness of the region is enhanced by the belief that Basaveshwara Swamy manifested in a cave at the site.

Highlighting the deep ecological wisdom of ancestors, Khandre said they respected nature and upheld the rights of all living beings, celebrating traditions like Vanamahotsava to protect the environment. He expressed concern that modern lifestyles have disrupted this balance, particularly among youth increasingly drawn towards harmful habits such as alcohol, smoking and drug use. He urged spiritual leaders to guide young people towards discipline, good health and meaningful lives rooted in cultural values.

Emphasising the ideals of Basavanna, including "Kayakave Kailasa" and selfless service, Khandre called for preserving heritage while contributing to society's progress. He lauded Veerashaiva Lingayat institutions for their role in education and social service but cautioned against growing distortions in the spiritual sphere. The event was attended by prominent seers and community leaders.
