Heavy Rain Paralyzes Delhi-NCR: Roads Become Rivers, Traffic Halts

Delhi-NCR Hit by Intense Rainfall, Causing Widespread Chaos

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) faced severe disruption on July 9, 2026, as heavy rainfall lashed the region, turning major roads into rivers and bringing traffic to a grinding halt. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 153 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, the highest in a decade for this date.

Waterlogging and Traffic Paralysis

Key stretches such as the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, the Outer Ring Road, and parts of the Ring Road near ITO were submerged under waist-deep water. Commuters reported spending over four hours on journeys that typically take 30 minutes. The Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories for 25 major intersections where waterlogging was severe.

According to a senior official from the Delhi Traffic Police, "We have deployed additional personnel to manage traffic and assist stranded commuters. However, the situation remains critical due to continuous rainfall."

Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure

The downpour led to the closure of several underpasses, including the Moolchand underpass and the one near Lajpat Nagar. Power outages were reported in multiple areas as a precautionary measure to prevent electrocution. The Delhi Metro reported delays on the Yellow and Blue lines due to water accumulation on tracks.

Schools and colleges in Delhi and Noida were declared closed for the day, and many offices allowed employees to work from home. The Delhi government set up 24 control rooms to coordinate relief efforts.

Forecast and Warnings

The IMD has issued a red alert for the next 48 hours, predicting more heavy to very heavy rainfall. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from vulnerable structures. The Yamuna River is flowing close to the danger mark, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

In a statement, the Delhi Chief Minister said, "We are doing everything possible to minimize the inconvenience caused by the unprecedented rainfall. The drainage system is being cleared, and pumps are deployed."

Response and Rescue Operations

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in low-lying areas, and boats are being used to rescue people from flooded localities. Over 50 people have been evacuated from areas like Shakarpur and Bhajanpura. The Delhi Fire Service received over 200 calls related to waterlogging and building collapses.

The heavy rain has also affected the internet and mobile services in some areas due to power cuts. Telecom companies are working to restore services using generators.
