Heavy Rain Recedes, Inflows into Krishna Basin Dams Drop

Inflows into major dams in the Krishna basin in Karnataka have decreased as heavy rain recedes across the region. The Hidkal dam in Hukkeri taluk recorded an inflow of 21,276 cusec on Friday, down from 28,603 cusec on Thursday, according to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.

Drop in Water Levels in Ghataprabha River

The decline in inflows is attributed to falling water levels in the Ghataprabha river, which feeds the Hidkal dam. The dam, also known as the Renuka Sagara reservoir, is a key irrigation source for the region. The reduced inflow follows a period of heavy rainfall that had raised concerns about flooding downstream.

Impact on Other Dams in the Basin

Similar trends were observed at other dams in the Krishna basin, including the Alamatti dam and the Narayanpur dam, where inflows have stabilized. The reduction in inflows has eased pressure on reservoir management authorities, who had been monitoring water levels closely during the peak monsoon period.

According to a senior official from the Water Resources Department, the situation is now under control. The official stated, "The decrease in inflows is a welcome sign as it reduces the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. We continue to monitor the situation and release water as needed to maintain safety."

Weather Forecast and Precautionary Measures

The India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the region over the next few days, with no warnings of extreme weather. Authorities have advised residents in downstream areas to remain vigilant but have lifted some evacuation advisories issued earlier this week.

The heavy rain that began earlier this month had caused a sharp rise in water levels in the Krishna basin, prompting authorities to release excess water from reservoirs. The current decrease in inflows provides relief for farmers and residents who were bracing for potential floods.
