Delegation-Level Talks Highlight Commitment to Deepen Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his New Zealand counterpart Christopher Luxon held delegation-level talks in New Delhi on Saturday, vowing to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. The discussions covered a wide range of areas including trade, defense, climate change, and people-to-people ties.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) negotiations, which have been ongoing since 2010. They expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial deal that would boost bilateral trade, currently valued at around $1.8 billion.

Trade and Economic Cooperation Take Center Stage

Modi and Luxon agreed to expedite the CECA talks, aiming to conclude them by early 2027. They also discussed enhancing cooperation in sectors such as dairy, pharmaceuticals, and information technology. Luxon highlighted New Zealand's expertise in agriculture and expressed interest in collaborating with India on food security and sustainable farming practices.

Bilateral trade has seen steady growth, with Indian exports to New Zealand including pharmaceuticals, textiles, and machinery, while New Zealand exports dairy products, wool, and wood to India. Both leaders acknowledged the potential to double trade volumes in the next five years.

Defense and Security Cooperation Strengthened

In the defense domain, the two prime ministers agreed to hold joint military exercises and increase intelligence sharing to counter terrorism and maritime security threats in the Indo-Pacific region. They also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cyber security cooperation.

According to a joint statement, both countries will work closely under the Quad framework, although New Zealand is not a formal member. Modi thanked Luxon for New Zealand's support in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Climate Change and Renewable Energy Commitments

Luxon praised India's leadership in the International Solar Alliance and committed to collaborating on renewable energy projects. Both countries set a target to jointly invest $100 million in green hydrogen initiatives over the next decade.

They also agreed to cooperate on climate adaptation measures, with New Zealand sharing its expertise in disaster management and early warning systems.

Cultural and People-to-People Ties

The leaders celebrated the strong Indian diaspora in New Zealand, which numbers over 250,000. They announced a new visa agreement to facilitate easier travel for students and skilled professionals. Modi invited Luxon to visit India again for the next Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.

Luxon, on his first official visit to India since becoming prime minister in 2023, said, "India is a key partner for New Zealand. Our friendship is based on shared values of democracy and rule of law. I am confident that our partnership will reach new heights."

Looking Ahead

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks and agreed to hold annual summits to review progress. The next meeting is scheduled for 2027 in Wellington. The strengthened partnership is expected to open new avenues for cooperation in trade, defense, and climate action, benefiting both nations.
