Mumbai and its suburbs were lashed by heavy rains on Wednesday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and disruption of flight operations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city, predicting very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions
Several low-lying areas in Mumbai, including Hindmata, King's Circle, and Sion, reported severe waterlogging. Commuters faced long delays as vehicles crawled through waterlogged roads. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps to drain water from affected areas.
Local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai, were also impacted. Some train services on the Central and Western lines were delayed due to waterlogging on tracks. The BMC advised people to stay indoors unless necessary.
Flight and Airport Operations Affected
Heavy rains also affected flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Several flights were diverted to other airports, and some were delayed. Airport authorities advised passengers to check with their airlines for updates.
According to an airport official, "Visibility was reduced due to heavy rain, leading to temporary suspension of flight operations. We are monitoring the situation and will resume normal operations as soon as weather conditions improve."
IMD Warning and Precautionary Measures
The IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Mumbai and its suburbs. A red alert has been issued, indicating the possibility of flooding and landslides. The BMC has set up control rooms and disaster management teams to respond to emergencies.
Schools and colleges in some areas were closed as a precautionary measure. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from coastal areas.
Impact on Daily Life
The heavy rains caused significant inconvenience to residents. Many people were stranded in offices and public places due to waterlogged roads and disrupted transport. Social media was flooded with pictures and videos of waterlogged streets and flooded homes.
One resident said, "The situation is very bad. Water has entered our homes, and we are unable to step out. We hope the rains stop soon."
The BMC has urged citizens to call the helpline numbers in case of emergencies. The civic body has also deployed additional staff to handle the situation.
