Indian Air Force Executes Comprehensive Drills on Purvanchal Expressway
The Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a significant exercise on Wednesday, performing landing and takeoff operations on the Purvanchal Expressway in Sultanpur district. This activity was part of activating an emergency landing facility (ELF), with drills conducted both during the day and at night to ensure operational readiness under all conditions.
Diverse Aircraft and Elite Forces in Action
The drills featured a wide array of IAF platforms, showcasing the force's versatility. Frontline fighter aircraft, including the Sukhoi Su‑30 MKI, Mirage‑2000, and Jaguar, participated actively. Additionally, transport aircraft such as the C‑295 and AN‑32 were involved, along with Mi‑17 V5 helicopters. The IAF's elite Garud Commando force also took part, demonstrating rapid deployment and security capabilities from a highway-based airstrip, highlighting their role in emergency scenarios.
Validating Operational Capabilities and Coordination
Officials stated that the exercise successfully validated the IAF's ability to conduct unhindered operations even when conventional air bases are unavailable. The activation of the ELF underscored the professional skills of aircrew and the efficiency of ground personnel in preparing and operating a highway airstrip at short notice. The drills were conducted in close coordination with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and the local administration, testing standard operating procedures for swift activation in emergencies.
Strategic Importance of Expressway Airstrips
According to officials, strategically developed airstrips on national expressways serve as critical force multipliers. They enhance operational flexibility during military contingencies and strengthen capabilities for disaster response and humanitarian assistance. This exercise emphasized the IAF's preparedness to leverage such infrastructure for national security and public welfare.
Key Observers and Broader Implications
Among the dignitaries who witnessed the exercises were Air Marshal B Manikantan, AOC-in-C of the Central Air Command; cabinet minister Om Prakash Rajbhar; and UPEIDA CEO Deepak Kumar. Their presence highlighted the importance of these drills in reinforcing India's defense mechanisms and emergency response strategies. The successful execution of these operations on the Purvanchal Expressway marks a significant step in enhancing the IAF's operational reach and resilience.
