India Secures Third Spot in Global Airpower, IAF Outranks China's PLAAF for Fifth Time Since 2022
India Ranks Third Globally in Airpower, Beats China Again

India Achieves Third Rank in Global Airpower Ranking

India has secured the third position in the latest World Air Forces 2026 ranking, released by FlightGlobal, a leading aviation data and analytics firm. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has outranked the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) of China for the fifth consecutive time since 2022, reinforcing its status as a formidable air power globally.

IAF Surpasses China's PLAAF in Fleet Strength

According to the report, the IAF operates a total of 2,229 aircraft, placing it ahead of China's PLAAF, which has 2,178 aircraft. The United States tops the list with 13,209 aircraft, followed by Russia with 4,255 aircraft. The IAF's fleet includes a mix of fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The ranking takes into account the total number of military aircraft in service, excluding reserves and aircraft under maintenance.

Key Factors Behind India's Strong Performance

The IAF's consistent performance in the rankings is attributed to its ongoing modernization programs, including the induction of Rafale fighter jets, upgrade of Mirage 2000 and Jaguar aircraft, and the development of indigenous platforms like the Tejas light combat aircraft. Additionally, India's focus on strengthening its helicopter fleet with Apache and Chinook helicopters has contributed to its numerical superiority over China.

"The IAF's third-place ranking reflects its operational readiness and modernization efforts," said a defense analyst. "The gap between India and China in terms of air power is expected to widen as India continues to induct new platforms."

China's Air Force Expansion and Challenges

While China has been expanding its air force with advanced aircraft like the J-20 stealth fighter and J-16 multirole fighter, the PLAAF still lags behind the IAF in total numbers. China's fleet includes a significant number of older generation aircraft, which may affect its overall combat effectiveness. The report highlights that China's air force is undergoing a rapid modernization, but the IAF's edge in numbers and diverse fleet gives it an advantage.

Global Airpower Landscape

The United States maintains its dominance with the largest air force in the world, followed by Russia. Other countries in the top ten include North Korea, Egypt, South Korea, and Japan. The ranking underscores the strategic importance of air power in modern warfare and the ongoing competition among nations to enhance their aerial capabilities.

Implications for Regional Security

India's superior air power ranking is significant in the context of regional security dynamics, particularly with China and Pakistan. The IAF's ability to maintain a larger and more modern fleet provides India with a strategic advantage in the Indo-Pacific region. The ranking also highlights India's growing defense cooperation with countries like France, the US, and Israel, which have supplied advanced aircraft and technology.

"The IAF's performance in the World Air Forces ranking is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our personnel," said an IAF official. "We remain committed to safeguarding our nation's skies."
