New Commanders Take Charge of Pakistan-Facing Commands
Two regional commands of the Indian Army that face Pakistan received new commanders on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra assumed command of the South-Western Army Headquarters in Jaipur, while Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar took over as the Southern Army Commander headquartered in Pune. Both commands are positioned as the frontline in any potential attack against the western neighbour, covering the entire border with Pakistan in Gujarat and Rajasthan, along with a small portion of southern Punjab.
Arsenal and Strategic Importance
The South-Western and Southern Commands possess a wide array of weaponry, including major armoured formations, infantry units, attack helicopters, offensive rocket formations, artillery guns, and air defence systems. The Southern Command also includes the 21 Strike Corps based in Bhopal, enhancing its offensive capability. According to the Tribune News Service, these commands would form the frontline in any attack against Pakistan.
Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra's Background
Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra was commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in June 1989. Prior to his new role, he served as Chief of Staff at Headquarters, Eastern Command, where he contributed significantly to operational preparedness, organisational effectiveness, and institutional cohesion. His command experience spans demanding environments such as the Siachen Glacier, an Armoured Regiment, an Independent Armoured Brigade, and an Armoured Division. He holds two Master’s Degrees in Defence Studies, including one from King's College London, and two M Phil degrees in Political Science and Defence and Strategic Studies.
Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar's Career
Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, was commissioned into the 74 Armoured Regiment in December 1988. He succeeded Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, who became the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. Pushkar has over four decades of military service, having commanded an Armoured Regiment, a strategic Independent Armoured Brigade, and an Infantry Division. He also headed the Indian Military Training Team to Bhutan and served as Defence and Military Attache at the Embassy of India in Moscow. Notably, he served as the 2 Strike Corps commander during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May 2025.
Recent Command Changes
These appointments follow the takeover of Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh as the Western Army Commander at Chandimandir in April 2026. The changes reflect the Indian Army's ongoing rotation of senior leadership to maintain operational readiness along the western border.
