Jharkhand Election Commissioner Stresses Youth's Role in Democratic Process
In a significant address on National Voters' Day, Jharkhand State Election Commissioner Alka Tiwari passionately appealed to young voters to exercise their franchise with freedom and responsibility. The event, held at the Aryabhatta auditorium of Ranchi University, brought together citizens to commemorate the importance of voting in a vibrant democracy.
Celebrating India's Democratic Heritage
Tiwari highlighted the unique privilege enjoyed by Indian citizens, noting that "while many nations struggled for decades to secure voting rights amidst discrimination based on class, creed, or gender, India granted equal voting rights to all citizens soon after Independence." She emphasized that the annual observance of National Voters' Day serves as a crucial reminder to reflect on this constitutional right and utilize it judiciously.
Empowering the Youth for Informed Voting
The Election Commissioner pointed out that the reduction of the voting age from 21 to 18 years was a strategic move, recognizing that Indian youth have become more educated and liberated from divisive influences like caste, religion, and language. She urged voters to base their decisions on the competence of candidates and their potential to drive positive societal change, rather than superficial factors.
"Voters should therefore cast their ballots by assessing the competence of candidates and their ability to bring positive change to society," Tiwari asserted, encouraging first-time voters to actively engage in the electoral process at all levels.
Addressing Urban Voting Challenges
Expressing concern over low voter turnout in urban areas, Tiwari warned that abstaining from voting forfeits the right to criticize elected representatives. She called for a collective effort to boost participation, stressing that every vote strengthens democratic foundations.
Practical Steps for Voter Registration
To facilitate youth involvement, Tiwari outlined multiple avenues for voter registration:
- Logging in to the Election Commission's official website
- Contacting the Booth-Level Officer (BLO) at respective polling stations
- Utilizing the Voter Helpline app for seamless enrollment
She specifically appealed to individuals aged 18 and above to ensure their names are included in the voter list to exercise their democratic rights effectively.
Honoring Exemplary Voters and Officials
The ceremony also recognized the contributions of various stakeholders in the electoral process. Awards were presented to:
- Elderly voters for their lifelong commitment to democracy
- First-time voters for embracing their civic duty
- Transgender voters for promoting inclusivity
- Election officials for outstanding performance in state and bye-elections
Jharkhand's Chief Electoral Officer, K. Ravi Kumar, administered a solemn oath to all attendees, pledging their dedication to free and fair participation in elections. This gesture reinforced the collective responsibility to uphold democratic values in Jharkhand and beyond.
