Kerala Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K. Surendran has sparked a fresh political controversy by referring to the Congress party as a 'cockroach party' and accusing it of being part of a larger conspiracy to destabilise India. Speaking at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, Surendran alleged that the Congress is working in tandem with foreign forces to undermine the country's unity and integrity.
Strong Allegations Against Congress
Surendran elaborated on his remarks, stating that the Congress party's actions are akin to those of cockroaches, which thrive in darkness and spread disease. He claimed that the party is engaged in anti-national activities and is responsible for creating unrest in various parts of the country. The BJP leader further alleged that the Congress is collaborating with extremist elements and foreign agencies to destabilise the democratically elected government at the Centre.
Reaction from Political Circles
The statement has drawn sharp reactions from the Congress party and other opposition groups. Congress leaders condemned the remarks as undemocratic and insulting to the people of India. They accused the BJP of using abusive language to divert attention from real issues such as unemployment, inflation, and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala also criticised the BJP's rhetoric, calling it a sign of desperation.
Context of the Allegations
This is not the first time that BJP leaders have used strong language against political opponents. However, the term 'cockroach party' has added a new dimension to the ongoing political feud. Surendran's comments come ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Kerala, where the BJP is trying to make inroads. Political analysts suggest that such statements are aimed at consolidating the BJP's core vote bank while polarising the electorate.
BJP's Strategy in Kerala
The BJP has been struggling to gain a foothold in Kerala, where the political landscape is dominated by the LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Surendran's aggressive rhetoric is seen as part of a strategy to position the BJP as a strong alternative. However, critics argue that such language only alienates moderate voters and reflects the party's frustration with its electoral performance.
Congress's Response
In response to Surendran's remarks, Congress leaders have demanded an apology. They stated that the BJP is trying to destroy democratic norms and that such language has no place in Indian politics. The Congress also accused the BJP of using state institutions to target political rivals and stifle dissent.
The controversy is expected to intensify as both parties prepare for the local body polls. The BJP's comments have also reignited debates about the level of political discourse in the country, with many calling for more respectful and issue-based dialogue.
