Kerala CM Pledges New Kerala Through Reforms

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Thursday stated that the United Democratic Front (UDF) government would work to fulfill the aspirations of the people and build a 'new Kerala' through comprehensive reforms in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the economy.

Response to Governor's Address

While replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor's policy address in the assembly, Satheesan acknowledged that Kerala had made significant progress in social sectors over the past decades. However, he noted that the state had recently witnessed stagnation due to delays in implementing development projects. The chief minister emphasized that the UDF government was open to criticism and willing to correct mistakes in the larger public interest.

Focus on Education and Healthcare

The chief minister highlighted the government's commitment to improving higher education and healthcare. He announced that world-class educational institutions and modern job-oriented courses would be introduced to curb student migration from the state. Kerala would also be developed as a healthcare destination, attracting medical tourism and providing top-notch services.

Indira Guarantees and Social Welfare

Satheesan noted that two of the five 'Indira Guarantees' promised by the UDF had already been approved by the cabinet. The first phase of free travel for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses will be launched on June 15. Additionally, he announced the creation of a dedicated department for senior citizens, aimed at promoting a 'silver economy' and enhancing their participation in society.

Infrastructure and Economic Goals

The government's major development goals include transforming Kerala into a maritime hub by integrating its ports and promoting coastal cargo transport, cruise tourism, and inland water tourism. Plans are also being pursued to make Kerala a major aviation hub through airport expansion and aviation-related projects. To boost the economy, the government will support startups through financial assistance and mentoring programs while creating a more investment-friendly environment.

Additional Measures

Satheesan also outlined measures to modernize higher education, combat drug abuse, strengthen public healthcare, and address human-wildlife conflict. These initiatives are part of the government's broader vision to propel Kerala toward sustainable development and improved quality of life for its citizens.
