Kerala CM Vijayan Says LDF Defeat a Complete Surprise

Outgoing Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday described the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) defeat in the Kerala assembly elections as a "complete surprise," while affirming that the alliance would function as a responsible opposition and continue advocating for social welfare measures in the state.

Vijayan's First Statement After Defeat

In his initial remarks following the electoral setback, Vijayan stated that the verdict was unexpected for the LDF, which had been striving for a third consecutive term in office. "The defeat in the assembly polls came as a complete surprise to us," the Communist Party of India (Marxist) veteran said, as reported by news agency PTI.

UDF Sweeps to Power

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a decisive victory in Kerala, ending the decade-long rule of the LDF government headed by Vijayan. Despite acknowledging the defeat, Vijayan emphasized that the Left alliance would play the role of a constructive opposition and continue to raise issues concerning welfare and public interest. "The LDF will act as a responsible opposition and pressure the government to implement social welfare measures," he stated.

Concerns Over BJP's Performance

Vijayan also described the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning three seats in the Kerala assembly elections as a "serious" development, reflecting concern within the Left camp over the saffron party's growing footprint in a state where it has historically struggled to gain electoral traction. The BJP's performance marks one of its best-ever showings in Kerala assembly elections, signaling a potential shift in the state's political landscape.
