The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and opposition leader V D Satheesan have urged party workers to cease their protests regarding the selection of the chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. The directive comes amid growing discontent among party ranks over the process.
Background of the Controversy
Many party workers have expressed their anger at AICC general secretary K C Venugopal for staking claim to the chief minister's post. The workers believe that the decision was made without proper consultation and has created divisions within the party.
Leaders' Appeal for Unity
In a joint statement, Satheesan and KPCC leaders emphasized the need for party unity ahead of the crucial elections. They requested workers to focus on strengthening the party at the grassroots level rather than engaging in internal disputes.
The leaders also assured that the final decision on the chief ministerial candidate would be taken by the party high command after considering all factors, including electoral viability and regional balance.
Reactions from Party Workers
Despite the appeal, some workers remain dissatisfied. They have called for a transparent process and have demanded that the party leadership listen to the voices of the cadre. However, senior leaders have warned that continued protests could harm the party's prospects in the upcoming elections.
The Congress party is keen to project a united front to challenge the ruling LDF government in Kerala. With the elections scheduled for 2026, internal bickering could prove costly.
