Kerala LDF Needs Complete Rebuild After 2024 LS Polls: CPI(M) Leader
Kerala LDF Needs Complete Rebuild After 2024 LS Polls

Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is facing a severe crisis, with senior CPI(M) leader A M Ariff admitting that cracks have appeared in the coalition's foundation since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and that a complete rebuild is necessary.

Ariff's Admission

Speaking to the media, Ariff acknowledged that the LDF's performance in the 2024 general elections exposed deep-seated weaknesses within the alliance. He stated that the cracks in the foundation are significant and cannot be ignored. The coalition must undergo a thorough restructuring to regain its strength ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.

Failure to Counter Communal Remarks

Ariff specifically pointed out a failure on the party's part in effectively opposing alleged communal comments made by Vellappally Natesan during the election period. Natesan, a prominent leader of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP), had made remarks that were widely criticized as communal. The CPI(M) leader admitted that the party's response was inadequate, which may have contributed to the erosion of support.

Background

The LDF, led by the CPI(M), has been in power in Kerala since 2016. However, the 2024 Lok Sabha polls saw the alliance losing ground, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) making significant gains. The results triggered introspection within the LDF, leading to the current assessment by Ariff.

Political analysts suggest that the LDF's internal discord and failure to address communal polarization are key factors behind its declining popularity. The upcoming 2026 Assembly elections will be a crucial test for the coalition, and Ariff's remarks indicate a recognition that urgent corrective measures are needed.

The CPI(M) is expected to initiate a series of organizational changes and outreach programs to rebuild the LDF's base. However, with the UDF gaining momentum, the task ahead is challenging.
