Khanna Municipal Council Election Results 2026: Vote Counting Underway Across 33 Wards
The counting of votes for the Khanna Municipal Council elections began early Thursday morning, with results expected to be declared by evening. The elections, held on May 27, saw a voter turnout of approximately 65%. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in 18 wards, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 10 wards, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in 3 wards, and the Congress in 2 wards. Independent candidates are leading in the remaining wards.
Key Contests and Candidates
In Ward 1, AAP candidate Manpreet Singh is leading by a margin of 1,200 votes. In Ward 5, BJP's Harvinder Kaur is ahead by 900 votes. Ward 12 sees SAD's Gurpreet Singh leading by a narrow margin of 250 votes. Congress candidate Rajesh Kumar is leading in Ward 20 with a lead of 600 votes. The counting process is being conducted under tight security at the Khanna Government College campus.
Reactions from Party Leaders
AAP state president Bhagwant Mann expressed confidence in his party's performance, stating, "The people of Khanna have reposed their faith in the AAP's governance model. We are committed to providing transparent and efficient administration." Meanwhile, BJP leader Vijay Sampla said, "Our party has performed well in urban areas, and we hope to form the council with the support of independents." SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said, "We respect the mandate and will play a constructive opposition role." Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said, "We have made significant gains in rural wards, and our party will continue to work for the people."
Voter Turnout and Arrangements
Over 1.2 lakh voters exercised their franchise across 150 polling stations. The Election Commission deployed 500 personnel for counting, with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. More than 200 candidates contested the elections, including 33 from AAP, 33 from BJP, 30 from SAD, 25 from Congress, and several independents.
Previous Council Composition
In the 2021 elections, the SAD had won 12 wards, BJP 10, Congress 7, and AAP 4. This time, the AAP has made substantial gains, overtaking the SAD and BJP. The final results are expected to be announced by 8 PM, with the new council set to elect the mayor and deputy mayor in the coming weeks.
