Kharge's Farewell Dig at Deve Gowda in Rajya Sabha

Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge Takes Playful Swipe at Former PM HD Deve Gowda During Rajya Sabha Farewell

In a light-hearted yet pointed moment during his farewell address in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to his colleagues while taking a subtle dig at former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. The veteran leader, who is retiring from his current term in the Upper House, shared a humorous anecdote about his long-standing relationship with Deve Gowda, drawing laughter from fellow MPs and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kharge Recalls 54-Year Association with Deve Gowda

Kharge revealed that he has known Deve Gowda for over five decades, stating, "I know Deve Gowda ji for more than 54 years and I worked with him a lot. Later, I don't know what happened...' Wo mohabbat humare saath kiye, shadi Modi sahab ke sath". This witty remark, which translates to "That love was with us, but the marriage is with Modi sahab", highlighted the shifting political alliances over time. Deve Gowda served as Prime Minister in 1996 leading a United Front government with Congress support, but his party, the JD(S), has since alternated between opposing and partnering with Congress in Karnataka.

Emphasis on Enduring Public Service

Beyond the humor, Kharge's speech centered on the perpetual nature of political service. He emphasized that those in public life "neither get tired nor retire" due to their unwavering commitment to the nation. Although formally ending his current Rajya Sabha term, Kharge is anticipated to return to the House, underscoring his belief that political careers rarely conclude definitively.

PM Modi Echoes Sentiment of Continuous Contribution

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the House, thanking outgoing members and reinforcing a similar theme. Modi remarked, "There is no full stop in politics. The future is waiting for you", encouraging retiring MPs to remain active in public life. He also urged newly elected members to learn from seasoned leaders like Deve Gowda, Kharge, and Sharad Pawar, noting their extensive parliamentary experience.

Recognition of Humor and Satire in Parliament

In his address, PM Modi specifically acknowledged Ramdas Athawale for his wit, observing that humor and satire in the House have diminished in recent years but persist through figures like him. Athawale is among the 37 members completing their terms, which include notable leaders such as Priyanka Chaturvedi, Tiruchi Siva, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Context of Rajya Sabha Retirements and Elections

These retirements follow elections to 37 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states, with 26 candidates elected unopposed. Political developments, such as opposition abstentions in Bihar that benefited the NDA, are reshaping the composition of the Upper House, marking a significant phase in India's legislative landscape.
