KPCC Chief Alleges RSS Link to Gauri Lankesh Murder

Allegation of RSS Involvement in Journalist's Murder

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Hariprasad has alleged a link between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh. Speaking to reporters, he questioned the timing of an upcoming RSS meeting in Belagavi, suggesting it may be connected to the case. Lankesh, a known critic of right-wing ideologies, was shot dead outside her Bengaluru home in September 2017.

RSS Meeting in Belagavi Draws Scrutiny

When asked about the RSS meeting scheduled in Belagavi, Hariprasad remarked, 'I don’t know why they are holding the meeting in Belagavi. Let the meeting conclude; we will respond then.' His statement implied that the Congress party is monitoring the event closely and will react based on its outcomes. The meeting has sparked political debate, with opposition parties accusing the RSS of attempting to expand its influence in the region.

Background of the Gauri Lankesh Case

Gauri Lankesh, a journalist and activist, was murdered on September 5, 2017, outside her residence in Bengaluru's Rajarajeshwari Nagar. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case arrested several individuals linked to right-wing groups. In 2023, a chargesheet was filed, naming multiple accused. The trial is ongoing, and the Congress party has repeatedly alleged that the RSS and affiliated organizations are involved, though the RSS has denied any connection.

Political Reactions and Implications

Hariprasad's comments have intensified the political rift in Karnataka. The ruling Congress party has been critical of the RSS, accusing it of interfering in state affairs. The BJP, which is in opposition in the state, dismissed the allegations as baseless. BJP spokesperson G. Madhusudhan said, 'The Congress is making irresponsible statements to divert attention from its failures.' The RSS has not officially responded to Hariprasad's remarks.

This development comes ahead of the 2028 Karnataka assembly elections, where the Congress aims to retain power. The party's strategy includes highlighting alleged RSS links to controversial incidents to consolidate secular votes. However, analysts warn that such allegations could polarize the electorate further.
