A tragic fire in a Lucknow building has claimed the lives of a recently engaged couple, whose wedding was scheduled for next year. The blaze broke out late Monday night in a multi-story building in the Hazratganj area, killing five people in total.
Couple's Love Story Ends in Tragedy
The couple, identified as 27-year-old Ravi Sharma and 25-year-old Priya Singh, had been engaged just two months ago. Their families had planned a grand wedding in early 2027. According to friends, the pair had been inseparable since their college days and were looking forward to a life together. The fire cut short their dreams.
Priya's mother, Sunita Singh, told reporters: "They were so happy. We were just finalizing the wedding venue. Now we have nothing but ashes."
Details of the Fire
The fire started around 11:30 PM on the second floor of the building, which housed a restaurant and several residential apartments. Officials said the cause is under investigation, but initial reports suggest an electrical short circuit. The flames quickly spread to upper floors, trapping residents.
Fire department teams arrived within 15 minutes, but the narrow lanes hampered access. It took over two hours to bring the blaze under control. Rescue workers recovered five bodies, including the couple, from a third-floor apartment. Three others were injured and are hospitalized.
Impact and Aftermath
The incident has sparked outrage over safety standards in older buildings. Local residents complained about the lack of fire escapes and inadequate emergency lighting. The district administration has ordered a probe and announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for the victims' families.
Lucknow District Magistrate Suryapal Gangwar said: "We will ensure strict action against those responsible. A detailed inquiry will be completed within a week."
The building owner has been detained for questioning. Fire safety audits of similar structures in the area have been ordered.
