Madhu Bangarappa Slams Vishwanath on SSLC Passout Remark

Karnataka School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa on Monday strongly criticized former minister Vishwanath's remarks on the high pass percentage in the SSLC examinations, calling them an insult to students who worked hard.

Bangarappa's Response

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Bangarappa said, "Vishwanath's statement is an insult to the lakhs of students who have worked hard and cleared the SSLC exams. Instead of appreciating their efforts, such comments demoralize them."

The minister also pointed out that former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had earlier criticized the reduction of the pass mark from 35 to 33 in the SSLC exams. "Bommai himself has spoken against lowering the pass mark. So, there is a contradiction in the opposition's stance," Bangarappa added.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy erupted after Vishwanath, a former minister and senior politician, commented on the high pass percentage in the SSLC results, suggesting that the government had deliberately reduced the pass mark to inflate the numbers. The SSLC exams are a crucial milestone for students in Karnataka, and the pass percentage this year saw a significant increase, which the government attributes to better preparation and support for students.

Bangarappa emphasized that the government had not compromised on standards. "The reduction in pass mark was based on expert recommendations and was aimed at helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds. It does not mean that students did not work hard," he explained.

Political Reactions

The issue has sparked a political debate, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Congress government of diluting education standards. However, the ruling Congress party has defended the decision, stating that it ensures more students pass and continue their education.

Bangarappa urged all parties to refrain from making statements that undermine students' achievements. "Education should not be politicized. Our focus should be on the future of our children," he said.

The SSLC results for the academic year 2025-26 were announced last week, with a pass percentage of 92.3%, the highest in recent years. The government has announced plans to further improve the quality of education and support systems for students.
