Heartfelt greetings to all Marathi brothers and sisters in Maharashtra and across the globe on Maharashtra Day. Sincere regards to all laborers, as today also marks Labour Day.
Maharashtra: A Confluence of History and Culture
Maharashtra is not merely defined by geographical boundaries; it represents a confluence of history, geography, and culture. The state embodies the inspiration of Swarajya from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the foundation of justice and wisdom laid by Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the divine legacy of saints' Abhangwani, the torch of education and equality lit by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule, and the national spirit awakened by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Swatantryaveer Savarkar. Maharashtra manifests through Maharashtra Dharma, and we all share the responsibility to promote it worldwide.
Special Year for Maharashtra Day
This Maharashtra Day is particularly special as it coincides with the 200th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and the 150th birth anniversary of Saint Gadge Maharaj. Additionally, the centenary of the historic battle of Chavdar Tale is being observed. The state is marking this year as the year of equality and social harmony.
Global Context and Energy Security
The ongoing conflict in Gulf countries has caused global suffering. In response, the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken concrete steps toward energy security, alternative oil sources, and solar energy expansion, shielding India from challenges faced by other nations.
Maharashtra's Economic Strength
Despite global challenges, Maharashtra stands strong as the world's 30th largest economy, contributing over 13.5 percent to India's GDP. In 2024-25, the state attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) worth Rs 1,64,875 crore, accounting for 39 percent of total FDI in the country. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Maharashtra signed MoUs worth Rs 30 lakh crore, expected to generate 40 lakh jobs. The state has also brought cities like Gadchiroli, Dhule, and Nandurbar onto the global investment map to achieve balanced development.
Agricultural Preparedness and Water Conservation
The Meteorological Department predicts below-average rainfall in 2026 due to El Nino. Since the kharif season depends on rains, farmers are advised not to rush sowing and to follow agriculture department instructions. The state government has begun planning for water and fodder, accelerating Jalyukt Shivar projects, dam desilting, and promoting drip and sprinkler irrigation. Sufficient fertilizers and seeds are available, and the government stands with farmers.
Farmer Loan Waiver and Solar Energy
Under the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar farmer loan waiver scheme, Rs 15,576 crore was deposited in accounts of flood-affected farmers. Free electricity is provided to agriculturists, and a major solar energy program is underway. The state has prepared a blueprint for 'Developed Maharashtra' aiming for a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2047.
Infrastructure Development
Maharashtra leads in infrastructure development globally. Currently, 173 km of metro lines operate in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, with plans to add 50 km annually. The Shaktipeeth project alongside Samruddhi Mahamarg is progressing. The Fourth Mumbai port at Vadhavan will be among the top ten worldwide. On Maharashtra Day, the 13.3 km 'missing link' on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway opens to the public, reducing distance by 6 km and travel time by 25-30 minutes.
Women Empowerment
Over 40 lakh women have become 'Lakhpati Didis' in Maharashtra. Under the UMED Abhiyan, bank loans have been provided to over 64 lakh families. Plans aim to increase Lakhpati Didis to 50 lakh this year. The Ladki Bahin Yojana and other schemes support women, while organizations like SARTHI, BARTI, MAHAJYOTI, ARTI, VANARTI, and AMRUT foster inclusivity.
Youth and Entrepreneurship
The state government has launched a major skill training program for youth. Six global universities in Navi Mumbai and institutions like IICT on the lines of IITs will add to the skill revolution. The Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skill University has expanded into AI and Data Science. Maharashtra aims to support 1.25 lakh entrepreneurs and 50,000 startups in five years through its Startup, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Policy. A separate sports policy is being formulated.
Good Governance and Heritage
Government services are now available on WhatsApp. Gadchiroli is Naxal-free and moving toward becoming a steel city. UNESCO World Heritage has included 11 forts from Maharashtra, recognizing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's legacy. Maharashtra is stronger, more self-reliant, and ambitious. The state government is committed to farmers, laborers, women, youth, and entrepreneurs. On Maharashtra Day, I pledge that Maharashtra will lead in fulfilling Prime Minister Modi's dream of a developed India by 2047.
