NEW DELHI: In a striking protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to conserve fuel amid the Middle East crisis, Maharashtra MLA from NCP (SP) Jitendra Awhad rode a horse directly into the municipal corporation headquarters in Thane. The unusual demonstration, which also involved several party leaders and workers, saw participants traveling on horses and bullock carts to symbolically 'save fuel'.
Protest Details
The agitation was led by Awhad, accompanied by Thane city president Manoj Pradhan and other opposition members. The group aimed to highlight what they perceive as the government's failure to address economic challenges, instead placing the burden on citizens.
PM Modi's Appeal
On Monday, PM Modi urged citizens to prioritize work-from-home, reduce foreign travel, and use public transportation to save fuel. This came after the US-Israel initiated war on Iran disrupted global oil supplies. He said, 'Wherever possible, utilise the Metro and public transportation; opt for carpooling; prioritise railways as a mode of transportation for goods; and wherever feasible, increase the usage of electric vehicles. Let us all come together and make every possible effort to conserve energy in our daily lives, so that the economic burden currently weighing upon the nation may be alleviated.'
Political Reactions
NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule demanded clarification on the Indian economy's health. In a post on X, she said, 'In view of the seriousness of this issue, the Prime Minister should convene an all-party meeting under his own chairmanship. Taking all party leaders into confidence on matters of national interest and conducting the decision-making process is absolutely essential for the good of the country.'
