Mamata Banerjee on Bengal Election Defeat
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has broken her silence on the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections, asserting that her party did not fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but the Election Commission (EC). In a candid revelation, she also disclosed that Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi called her to express support after the results.
Blame on Election Commission
Addressing a party meeting, Banerjee stated, "We didn't fight the BJP; we fought the EC. The way the elections were conducted, it was clear that the Commission was acting under pressure from the central government." She cited instances of alleged irregularities, including the deployment of central forces and the timing of polling phases, which she claimed favored the BJP.
Congress Support
Banerjee further revealed that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi reached out to her after the TMC's setback. "Sonia ji and Rahul ji called me. They said they stand with us. I appreciate their gesture," she said. This development is significant given the often strained relations between the TMC and Congress in West Bengal.
Election Results
The BJP made substantial gains in West Bengal, winning 18 out of 42 seats, up from 18 in 2019, while the TMC secured 29 seats, a decrease from 34. The results were a major blow to Banerjee, who had campaigned aggressively against the BJP. Despite the loss, she remains defiant, emphasizing that the TMC's vote share remained strong.
Opposition Unity
Banerjee's comments come amid ongoing discussions about opposition unity ahead of the 2024 general elections. While she has been a vocal critic of the BJP, her relationship with the Congress has been complex. The phone call from the Gandhis could signal a potential thaw in relations, though Banerjee stopped short of committing to any alliance.
Looking Ahead
The TMC chief has vowed to continue fighting for the people of West Bengal and against what she terms the "undemocratic practices" of the EC. She also hinted at legal action against the Commission. "We will approach the courts. The people of Bengal will not forgive those who rigged the elections," she warned.
Political analysts view Banerjee's remarks as an attempt to rally her cadre and deflect blame from internal party issues. However, her acknowledgment of Congress support suggests that opposition parties may be exploring ways to collaborate despite their differences.
