West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday refused to resign following the results of the 2026 Assembly elections, alleging that the verdict was a conspiracy against her party. Speaking to reporters, Banerjee asserted, 'I will not resign, I did not lose the polls. This verdict is a conspiracy.'
Allegations of Irregularities
Banerjee claimed large-scale irregularities during the counting process, stating that the mandate in nearly 100 seats was 'looted.' She further alleged that the counting was deliberately slowed down to demoralise her party workers and supporters. 'They manipulated the process to ensure we do not get our rightful share,' she added.
Party's Stance
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo reiterated that her party would challenge the results through legal and democratic means. 'We will not accept this stolen mandate. We will fight back,' she declared. Banerjee also accused the opposition parties of colluding with the Election Commission to rig the elections.
The West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 saw a high voter turnout, with the TMC and its main rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), locked in a fierce contest. The final results showed a narrow victory for the BJP-led alliance, prompting Banerjee's allegations.
Political Reactions
The BJP dismissed Banerjee's claims, calling them a 'classic excuse of a sore loser.' Party spokesperson said, 'Mamata Banerjee must accept the people's verdict gracefully. Her allegations are baseless and an insult to the democratic process.'
Political analysts suggest that Banerjee's refusal to resign could lead to a prolonged political crisis in the state. However, constitutional experts note that as the Chief Minister, she is not required to resign unless she loses a confidence motion in the assembly.
The Election Commission has not yet responded to the allegations but is expected to issue a statement soon. Meanwhile, TMC supporters have begun protests across the state, demanding a recount and investigation into the counting process.
