Search Operations Underway in Ukhrul Following Fatal Ambush

Security forces have launched extensive search operations in residential areas, vulnerable routes, and forests in Manipur's Ukhrul district to apprehend those responsible for the killing of two Assam Rifles personnel earlier this week, according to an official statement released on Saturday.

The Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Manipur Police, began a large-scale search operation in the Nungshang area on Friday. The joint force is conducting intensive combing operations across residential zones, vulnerable routes, and surrounding forests to trace the perpetrators, recover hidden caches, and ensure the safety of local residents, the paramilitary force said.

Details of the Ambush

Assam Rifles Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar CM Singh were killed when suspected militants fired at a convoy of the force in the Nungshong Khong area under Ukhrul Police Station limits on July 6. In a post on X, the Assam Rifles stated: "Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Manipur Police, launched a large-scale search operation in the Nungshang area of Ukhrul District, Manipur on 10 July 2026 following the tragic ambush of 06 July 2026 in which two Assam Rifles personnel made the supreme sacrifice."

Ongoing Operations and Commitment to Justice

The operation is ongoing, reaffirming the security forces' unwavering commitment to restoring peace, maintaining law and order, and bringing those responsible to justice, the statement added. The search operations are part of a broader effort to stabilize the region, which has been plagued by ethnic violence for the past three years.

NSCN-IM Denies Involvement

Meanwhile, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), a Naga organization, has denied any role in the attack. In a statement, the organization said it had no connection with the ambush and reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire agreement with the central government. The NSCN-IM emphasized that it remains dedicated to the ongoing peace talks and condemned actions that could undermine the peace process. It urged all stakeholders to act responsibly to preserve dialogue and stability.

Broader Context of Ethnic Violence

Security forces have been conducting search operations and area domination in fringe and vulnerable localities across Manipur since ethnic violence erupted three years ago. The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has resulted in more than 260 deaths and thousands of people rendered homeless. The latest ambush underscores the persistent security challenges in the region despite ongoing peace efforts.
