Madhya Pradesh Boat Tragedy: Multiple Fatalities Reported
A devastating accident occurred on Thursday afternoon when a cruise boat carrying approximately 40 passengers capsized in the Bargi Dam reservoir near Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. According to officials, at least 12 people have been confirmed dead, and several others remain missing as rescue teams continue search operations.
Incident Details
The boat, which was on a recreational trip, overturned around 2:30 PM local time due to strong winds and overloading. Eyewitnesses reported that the vessel was not equipped with life jackets for all passengers. Local authorities have launched a massive rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local divers.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also directed officials to ensure speedy rescue and medical aid to the injured.
Rescue Operations Underway
As of Thursday evening, rescue teams have recovered 12 bodies, while search efforts continue for at least 8 missing persons. The operation is being hampered by low visibility and strong currents in the reservoir. District authorities have set up a control room and deployed additional boats for the search.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and assured all possible assistance from the central government. The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
Previous Incidents and Safety Concerns
This tragedy highlights recurring safety concerns regarding boat operations in the region. In 2023, a similar incident in the Narmada river had claimed 16 lives. Activists have repeatedly demanded stricter enforcement of safety norms, including mandatory life jackets and capacity limits.
The boat's owner has been taken into custody for questioning. Authorities are investigating whether the vessel was overloaded and if proper safety measures were followed.
Community in Mourning
Local residents gathered at the dam site, anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones. Many families are still awaiting confirmation about missing members. The state government has announced free treatment for the injured and has arranged for transportation of bodies to their native places.
Relief and rescue operations will continue through the night, with officials stating that all efforts are being made to locate the missing.
