Heavy Rains Claim Another Life in Mumbai
A man died in Mumbai's Chandivali area on July 2, 2026, after falling into an uncovered manhole that was concealed by severe waterlogging caused by heavy rains. The incident adds to the city's grim toll during the monsoon season.
According to officials, the victim was walking on a waterlogged street when he stepped into the open manhole, which was hidden under murky floodwater. Rescue teams arrived promptly but the man had already succumbed to injuries or drowning. His identity has not been released pending family notification.
Waterlogging and Infrastructure Failures
The Mumbai civic body has faced repeated criticism over uncovered manholes during rains. In 2025, at least four such deaths were reported across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has a hotline for reporting open manholes, but implementation remains patchy.
Mumbai received 204 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending July 2, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas like Chandivali, Sion, and Kurla. Traffic was disrupted on the Eastern Express Highway and several local train services were delayed.
Community and Official Response
Local residents reported the manhole to authorities after the incident. A BMC spokesperson said, “Our teams are inspecting all manholes in the area. We urge citizens to report any open manholes via our app or helpline.” However, activists argue that preventive measures are inadequate.
This death underscores the urgent need for better drainage maintenance and manhole safety measures as Mumbai braces for more heavy rainfall in the coming days. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the city.
