Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Waterlogging in Mumbai Region
Heavy rains lashed the Mumbai metropolitan region on Thursday, July 2, 2026, leading to severe waterlogging in several areas of Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for these districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.
School Holiday Declared in Palghar
In response to the downpour, the Palghar district administration declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Thursday. An official statement said, "Keeping in view the safety of students, all educational institutions in Palghar district will remain closed on July 2, 2026."
Flights Diverted Due to Poor Visibility
Poor visibility caused by the heavy rains led to the diversion of at least four flights from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. Airport officials confirmed that flights were rerouted to nearby airports including Ahmedabad and Jaipur. "Visibility dropped below 500 meters, making it unsafe for landing," an airport spokesperson said.
Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions
Several low-lying areas in Thane and Raigad districts reported knee-deep waterlogging, disrupting traffic movement. The Thane Municipal Corporation deployed pumps to drain water from affected roads. In Raigad, the district collector urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
Rescue Operations Underway
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities have been deployed for rescue operations. So far, no casualties have been reported, but teams are on standby. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region for the next 24 hours.
