Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced that the Indian Navy successfully escorted 18 vessels carrying cargo worth over Rs 9,000 crore during the recent West Asia crisis. The announcement was made during the launch of INS Mahendragiri, a new stealth frigate, at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai.
Protecting Maritime Trade Routes
Singh highlighted the Navy's role in safeguarding India's maritime interests amid heightened tensions in the region. The escorted vessels included commercial ships transporting critical goods such as oil, chemicals, and machinery, ensuring uninterrupted trade flows. The operation demonstrated India's capability to protect its economic assets and maintain stability in key sea lanes.
“The Indian Navy ensured the safe passage of 18 vessels carrying cargo valued at over Rs 9,000 crore through volatile waters during the West Asia crisis,” Singh said. He emphasized that such operations underscore India's commitment to maritime security and its role as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean region.
INS Mahendragiri: Enhancing Eastern Seaboard Security
The Defence Minister expressed confidence that the newly launched INS Mahendragiri would further strengthen India's overall maritime strategy. The stealth frigate is designed to enhance the country's eastern seaboard defenses and bolster naval capabilities. “INS Mahendragiri will play a crucial role in protecting our maritime interests and projecting power in the Bay of Bengal and beyond,” Singh added.
INS Mahendragiri is the seventh and final ship of the Project 17A stealth frigate class, equipped with advanced weapons and sensors. It incorporates cutting-edge technology for anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare, making it a formidable addition to the Indian Navy's fleet.
Strategic Implications
The escort operation and the induction of INS Mahendragiri come at a time of evolving geopolitical dynamics in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
