Odisha Chief Minister Condemns Opposition for Stalling Women's Reservation Bill
In a fiery address at a 'Jana akrosh' (public outrage) women's rally held in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched a scathing attack on opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), for their role in blocking the Women's Reservation Bill. Majhi accused these parties of betraying women and violating their constitutional rights, framing the issue as a critical setback for gender equality in Indian politics.
A Betrayal of Women's Dreams
Majhi emphasized that the stalling of the Bill represents more than just a legislative defeat; he described it as "the abortion of mothers' dreams". He alleged that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been advocating for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies to enhance their participation in policy-making, opposition parties have obstructed this progress due to "narrow political interests". According to Majhi, this move is not a loss for Modi but a severe blow to women across the nation, who he claims are being treated merely as a vote bank by parties like the Congress.
Political Rhetoric and Public Outrage
The Chief Minister also condemned what he termed as "indecent language" used by opposition leaders, indirectly referencing recent remarks by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge against the prime minister and women. Majhi warned that the political future of these opposition parties would be "reduced to dust" due to mounting public anger. He urged women to raise their voices for their rights, asserting that their faith in Modi would be fulfilled in the coming days.
BJP's Stance and Broader Protests
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida reinforced the BJP's commitment, stating that the party has consistently supported women's rights. Meanwhile, BJP state president Manmohan Samal highlighted the historical significance of the Parliament discussion on the Women's Reservation Bill on April 17, suggesting it had the potential to reshape India's political landscape. Samal declared that the nation will never forgive those who prevented the Bill's passage and announced plans to escalate protests to district, mandal, and booth levels until women achieve "constitutional respect".
Rally and Accusations
The rally featured a march from Exhibition Ground to Lower PMG, with participation from women across various societal sections. The BJP further accused the BJD of aligning with Congress and other parties such as the DMK, TMC, and Samajwadi Party, which voted against the Bill in Parliament. This event underscores the ongoing political tensions and the BJP's strategy to mobilize public support around women's empowerment issues ahead of future elections.
