National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has expressed acute disappointment over the Centre’s delay in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, accusing the government of deceit and a breach of promise. Speaking to reporters, Abdullah questioned whether the people of the region were being punished for not electing a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief minister. He emphasised that the restoration of statehood was a solemn commitment made by the central government, and the prolonged delay amounts to a betrayal of trust.
Statehood Restoration: A Lingering Promise
The demand for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir has been a key political issue since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The Centre has maintained that statehood will be granted at an appropriate time, but no concrete timeline has been announced. Omar Abdullah’s remarks come amid growing frustration among regional parties and the public over the indefinite wait. He asserted that the delay is not just a political failure but also an affront to the democratic aspirations of the people.
Political Reactions and Implications
The National Conference leader’s statement has sparked a fresh debate on the status of Jammu and Kashmir. Other regional parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have also voiced similar concerns. Political analysts suggest that the issue could influence upcoming elections in the region. Meanwhile, the BJP has defended its position, stating that statehood will be restored once normalcy returns. However, critics argue that the government is using security concerns as an excuse to delay political empowerment.
Omar Abdullah concluded by urging the Centre to honour its word and restore statehood without further delay. He warned that continued inaction could lead to heightened public discontent and further alienation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
