Contractual employees of Punjab Roadways, Punbus, and PRTC staged a protest in Amritsar on Wednesday, demanding regularisation of their services and better wages. The workers, under the banner of the Punjab Roadways Contractual Workers Union, gathered at the local bus stand and raised slogans against the state government.
Demands of the Protesters
The protesters presented a charter of demands, including regularisation of all contractual employees, minimum wage as per government norms, and timely payment of salaries. They also demanded that the government stop the outsourcing of services and fill vacant posts through direct recruitment.
Threat of Indefinite Strike
The union leaders warned that if their demands are not met within a week, they will launch an indefinite strike from next month. They claimed that over 5,000 contractual employees are working under poor conditions across the state.
The protest caused disruptions in bus services for some time, but the situation was brought under control by the police. The union has submitted a memorandum to the district administration, urging them to forward their demands to the state government.
