Political Row Erupts Over Venue Change for President Murmu's Santal Event in West Bengal

A significant political controversy has erupted in West Bengal following the last-minute change of venue for an event attended by President Droupadi Murmu, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticizing the state's TMC government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hitting back with accusations of political manipulation.

PM Modi Condemns TMC Government for "Insult" to President and Tribal Communities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal, accusing them of disrespecting both the office of the President and the Santal tribal community. In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the venue change for President Murmu's Santal cultural event.

"This is shameful and unprecedented," PM Modi stated. "Everyone who believes in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities is disheartened. The pain and anguish expressed by Rashtrapati Ji, who herself hails from a tribal community, has caused immense sadness in the minds of the people of India."

The Prime Minister directly blamed the TMC administration for what he called an "insult to the President" and criticized their handling of the situation. "The TMC Government of West Bengal has truly crossed all limits. Their administration is responsible for this insult to the President," he asserted.

PM Modi further emphasized the importance of respecting the presidential office, stating: "It is equally unfortunate that a subject as important as Santal culture is treated so casually by the West Bengal Government. The office of the President is above politics and the sanctity of this office should always be respected." He concluded with a hope that "better sense prevails among the West Bengal Government and TMC."

President Murmu's Strong Displeasure Over Venue Change

The controversy stems from President Droupadi Murmu's expressed disappointment regarding the sudden change of location for an International Santal Conference she was scheduled to attend in West Bengal. The President revealed that authorities had moved the event from its original location, claiming it was too congested.

"I don't know what went through the administration's mind that they chose a place for the conference where the Santal people couldn't go," President Murmu stated. "I am very sad that the people here were unable to reach the conference because it was held so far away."

She questioned the administration's decision, noting that the original venue could have accommodated approximately five lakh people easily. The President also expressed sadness that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not meet her during the visit, which she described as a departure from usual protocol.

"Perhaps the administration had hoped that no one would be able to attend, and the President would simply turn around and leave," she speculated. "If the President visits a place, the Chief Minister and the Ministers should also come. But she did not."

President Murmu, who has personal connections to Bengal, added emotionally: "I am also a daughter of Bengal... Mamata Didi is also my sister, my younger sister. I don't know if she was angry with me, that's why this happened."

Mamata Banerjee's Strong Rebuttal and Accusations Against BJP

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has responded forcefully to the criticism, targeting both President Murmu and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She accused the BJP of exploiting the President for political gains and advised Murmu against engaging in politics.

"BJP has stooped so low that it is using President Droupadi Murmu to malign West Bengal," Banerjee declared. She questioned the President's concern for tribal communities, asking: "Why don't you protest when atrocities are committed against tribals? Why don't you protest when it happens in Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh?... First do something for them, then say anything."

The Chief Minister directly advised President Murmu: "Don't play politics at the time of the election, as per the BJP's advice." Her comments reflect the escalating political tensions between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal, particularly in the context of upcoming elections.

Broader Implications and Political Context

This controversy highlights several significant issues:

  • The treatment of tribal communities and their cultural events in political discourse
  • The relationship between state governments and constitutional authorities
  • The increasing political polarization in West Bengal ahead of elections
  • The role of the President's office in India's political landscape

The exchange between PM Modi and CM Banerjee represents a significant escalation in the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal. Both parties are positioning themselves as champions of tribal rights while accusing the other of political opportunism.

As the controversy continues to develop, it raises important questions about protocol, respect for constitutional offices, and the genuine empowerment of tribal communities in India's political framework. The incident has drawn national attention to West Bengal's political dynamics and the treatment of indigenous communities in the state.
