Hydrogen Train Launch Date and Route
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off India's first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026, according to sources in the Ministry of Railways. The train will operate on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana, making two round trips daily, covering a total distance of 356 km per day.
Significance for Green Rail Transport
This launch marks a major step toward Indian Railways' goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. The hydrogen fuel cell technology produces only water vapor as emission, eliminating particulate pollution along the route. A senior railway official stated, "This is a proud moment for Indian Railways as we lead the way in sustainable mobility."
Technical Specifications and Trials
The hydrogen train is part of the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' project, which aims to convert 35 existing diesel-electric locomotives into hydrogen fuel cell variants. The train has undergone extensive trials on the Jind-Sonipat section, achieving a top speed of 140 km/h. Each train will carry 2,500 liters of hydrogen in onboard tanks, sufficient for a 500-km range.
Cost and Infrastructure
Indian Railways has invested approximately ₹80 crore for the development and retrofitting of the first hydrogen train. A dedicated hydrogen production and refueling station has been set up at Jind, with an electrolyzer capacity of 1 MW, producing green hydrogen from renewable energy sources.
Impact on Local Economy and Environment
The route connects agricultural hubs and industrial areas, expected to boost freight and passenger traffic. Environmentalists have praised the move, with Dr. Sunita Narain, director of the Centre for Science and Environment, commenting, "This demonstrates that hydrogen traction is viable for India's rail network and can significantly cut diesel consumption."
Future Plans for Hydrogen Trains
Indian Railways plans to introduce hydrogen trains on other heritage and hilly routes, including the Kalka-Shimla and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, by 2027. The Ministry has allocated ₹1,200 crore for the first phase of the Hydrogen for Heritage project.
