Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday made a significant visit to a tea garden in Dibrugarh, Assam, ahead of two scheduled public rallies in the poll-bound state. During his interaction with women workers at the garden, he described tea as the "soul of Assam," emphasizing its global reach and cultural importance.
Memorable Experience and Social Media Posts
"Tea is the soul of Assam! The tea from here has reached across the world," PM Modi wrote on X, sharing photos from his visit. He added, "This morning in Dibrugarh, I visited a tea garden and interacted with the women working here. It was a very memorable experience." The Prime Minister also expressed pride in the efforts of tea garden families, stating, "We are very proud of the efforts of every tea garden family. Their hard work and perseverance have enhanced Assam’s pride." He further shared a selfie with the women workers, highlighting the personal connection made during the visit.
Assam's Tea Production and Economic Significance
According to the Assam State Portal, the state produces approximately 630 to 700 million kilograms of tea annually. This output accounts for over half of India's total tea production, underscoring Assam's pivotal role in the national and global tea industry. The visit by PM Modi brings attention to this economic backbone, which supports numerous livelihoods across the region.
Upcoming Public Rallies and Election Campaign
As per his itinerary, Prime Minister Modi will address two key rallies in Assam. The first rally is scheduled at Gogamukh in Dhemaji at 11 am, where he will campaign for BJP candidates Ranoj Pegu and Naba Kumar Doley from the Dhemaji and Dhakuakha assembly constituencies. Following this, a second public meeting will be held in Biswanath district around 1 pm, where he will support party candidate and former minister Pallab Lochan Das in Behali. Senior BJP leaders and state ministers are expected to attend both events, highlighting the party's focus on the upcoming elections.
Election Details and Political Context
All 126 assembly seats in Assam are set to go to polls on April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. This election coincides with counting in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, and the Union territory of Puducherry, where elections will be held around the same period. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has been in power in Assam since 2016, when the party secured its first assembly election victory in the state. PM Modi's visit and rallies are part of a strategic campaign to reinforce support and address key issues ahead of the crucial voting day.
The Prime Minister's engagement with tea garden workers not only highlights the cultural and economic significance of tea in Assam but also serves as a platform to connect with voters in a state where agriculture and traditional industries play a vital role. His emphasis on the hard work of tea families aims to resonate with local communities, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the tightly contested elections.
