Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose symbolism as much as celebration when he arrived at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi on Monday, hours after the party's sweeping victory in West Bengal. Known for using attire to signal political messages, the Prime Minister appeared in a traditional Bengali ensemble, aligning his appearance with the state that had just delivered a landmark mandate.
Cultural Attire Details
He wore a white kurta, known as a panjabi in Bangla, paired with a Tussar silk dhuti edged with a red border, a classic style associated with Bengali men. While the attire celebrated Bengali culture, the details were deliberate. PM Modi also tucked the end of his dhuti into his kurta pocket, a nuanced touch that mirrors how the garment is traditionally worn in Bengal. Draped around his neck was a cotton scarf featuring buti motifs, the dotted patterns commonly seen in Bengali textiles, adding another layer of cultural reference.
Electoral Context
The sartorial choice came as the BJP surged past the majority mark in the 294-member Assembly, heading toward a decisive victory that would end the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule. Early leads quickly turned into a commanding sweep, with the party racing ahead in over 200 seats. At the time of reporting, the BJP had already secured 18 seats and was leading in another 185, while the TMC trailed significantly, struggling to keep pace even as counting progressed.
Beyond the numbers, the scale of the victory signaled a deeper shift in Bengal's political landscape. The BJP's vote share climbed to around 45 percent, up from 38 percent in 2021, pointing to both consolidation and expansion of its base. In contrast, the TMC's vote share dipped to nearly 40.94 percent from 48 percent, suggesting erosion across key voter segments that had powered its earlier dominance.
Symbolism and Political Message
Against this backdrop, Modi's attire served as a visual bridge between political triumph and cultural acknowledgement. It was not just a celebration of electoral success, but also a carefully crafted gesture aimed at embedding the victory within Bengal's social and cultural fabric.
PM Modi's Address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the BJP's sweeping performance in the West Bengal and Assam Assembly elections, calling the moment "historic" and "unprecedented" as he addressed party workers at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. Emphasizing the scale of the victory and the effort behind it, he said, "Today is a historic day. It is unprecedented. When years of efforts turn into success, the happiness that is seen on the faces of people is the same happiness that I see on the faces of BJP workers across the country today."
Invoking cultural and philosophical resonance, the Prime Minister also referenced Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore while outlining the party's vision for Bengal following the decisive mandate. Framing the victory as an opportunity to reshape the state's socio-political environment, he said, "Standing on the threshold of this great victory, we also remember Gurudev Tagore... His dream of an environment where the mind is free from fear and the head is held high must also be our resolve. The BJP will create such a fear-free environment in Bengal. This is Modi's guarantee."
Gratitude to Voters
Broadening his address beyond Bengal, Modi expressed gratitude to voters across multiple states and Union Territories that went to the polls, including Assam and Puducherry, while also acknowledging the party's efforts in southern states. He said, "Today, I respectfully bow to the people of Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, and the people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala... I also heartily congratulate the millions of BJP workers. Every BJP worker, big or small, has once again performed wonders. They have made the lotus bloom..."
Referring specifically to Puducherry, where the NDA retained power, the Prime Minister underscored continuity in governance and the electorate's endorsement of the alliance's development agenda. He said, "In 2021, we presented the vision of Best Puducherry to the people of Puducherry. The people of Puducherry expressed their faith in that vision and blessed us. Over the past five years, our NDA government has worked with complete dedication and commitment to accelerate this vision. And today, once again, the people of Puducherry have expressed their trust in the NDA."
