Channi Camp Seeks Baghel's Intervention in Punjab Congress Leadership Tussle
Ending days of suspense over the Punjab Congress chief post, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and senior leaders from his camp met Congress observer Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday. The delegation apprised Baghel of what they described as the 'sentiments' of party workers regarding the leadership change.
The meeting, held at Baghel's residence in New Delhi, lasted over an hour. Sources indicated that Channi's faction pushed for a consensus candidate who could balance factional interests within the state unit. The development comes amid growing speculation about a potential reshuffle in the Punjab Congress leadership ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
Key Leaders Attend the Meeting
Among those present were former minister Rana Gurjit Singh, MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, and several district-level functionaries. The group urged Baghel to consider the ground-level feedback from party workers who, according to them, favor a leader with grassroots connect.
Baghel, who is the All India Congress Committee's observer for Punjab, assured the delegation that he would convey their views to the party high command. He emphasized the need for unity and discipline within the state unit.
Background of the Leadership Tussle
The Punjab Congress has been grappling with internal strife since the 2022 assembly elections, where the party lost power to the Aam Aadmi Party. The current state president, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, has faced criticism from some quarters for his handling of party affairs. Channi, who served as Chief Minister for a brief period in 2021-22, remains a influential figure in the state's Dalit politics.
According to party insiders, at least three names have been proposed for the state chief post: Channi himself, former MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, and ex-minister Brahm Mohindra. However, no final decision has been taken.
Congress High Command's Balancing Act
The central leadership is keen to avoid a repeat of the factional feuds that plagued the party during its previous tenure in government. Baghel's visit to Delhi earlier this week was seen as part of efforts to broker peace. A senior AICC functionary said, "The party is committed to strengthening the Punjab unit and ensuring that all voices are heard before any decision."
Channi, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said, "We have placed our point of view before the observer. The final decision rests with the party president." He declined to comment on whether he was a contender for the post.
Implications for 2027 Elections
With the next Punjab assembly elections due in 2027, the Congress is working to rebuild its organizational structure. The choice of state chief will be critical in determining the party's strategy against the ruling AAP and the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine. Political analysts note that a Dalit face like Channi could help the party consolidate its core vote bank.
The AICC is expected to announce the new Punjab Congress president within the next fortnight, following consultations with all stakeholders.
