Punjab Congress Chief Appeals to Union Minister for Farmer Relief After Crop Devastation
In a significant move, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has called upon Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to provide urgent assistance to farmers in Punjab whose crops have been severely damaged by recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms. This appeal highlights the growing distress in the agricultural community following the natural calamity.
Extensive Crop Damage Reported Across Punjab
Warring, in an official statement, detailed that a large portion of Punjab, particularly the Malwa belt, experienced heavy rains and hailstorms that not only flattened but completely destroyed the ripe wheat crop. He emphasized that the damage is so extensive that the affected crops cannot even be repurposed for fodder, leaving farmers with significant losses.
Criticism of Punjab Government's Response
The Congress leader strongly criticized the Punjab government for its failure to reach out to the affected farmers promptly. He compared the current devastation to the devastating floods that occurred last year, noting that the state government did not provide compensation to the majority of victims from that event. Warring expressed little hope in the state's current efforts, labeling their announcements to conduct a girdawari (survey) of the damaged crops as mere token gestures.
He questioned the purpose of such surveys when entire fields are already flattened, suggesting that these announcements are intended to mislead the victims rather than offer real help. Warring argued that if the state government had clear intentions, it would provide immediate interim relief to farmers without waiting for survey reports.
Direct Appeal to Central Government
To address this crisis, Warring has taken matters into his own hands by writing to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He plans to meet the minister in Delhi after personally visiting the affected areas to assess the situation firsthand. In his appeal, Warring will plead for immediate assistance, stressing that farmers cannot afford to wait for the state government's delayed survey process.
Reflecting on past experiences, Warring added that the timeline for state government surveys and compensation payments has been unreliable and disappointing, further justifying the need for central intervention. This proactive approach underscores the urgency of the situation and the Congress party's commitment to supporting Punjab's agricultural sector during this challenging time.
