Channi Camp Digs In Against Warring
The faction loyal to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has taken a firm stance against the projection of Congress leader Raja Warring as the party's chief ministerial face for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The matter has now been escalated to the Congress high command, with both sides refusing to back down.
According to party insiders, the Channi camp has conveyed its strong opposition to Warring's candidature, arguing that it would alienate Dalit and backward communities who form a significant vote bank for the Congress in Punjab. Channi, who hails from a Dalit background, became the state's first Dalit CM in 2021.
No Consensus in Sight
The internal discord comes ahead of the crucial 2027 polls, where the Congress hopes to wrest power from the Aam Aadmi Party. However, the lack of unity over leadership is seen as a major hurdle. A senior Congress leader stated, "The high command has been informed of the differences. It is now up to the central leadership to find a solution that keeps the party united."
Raja Warring, a prominent Jat Sikh leader from the Doaba region, has been backed by a section of the party for his organizational skills and grassroots connect. But the Channi camp claims that imposing a Jat face could cost the party the support of non-Jat communities.
High Command's Dilemma
The Congress high command, led by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, is now tasked with balancing caste equations and factional loyalties. A similar situation arose in 2021 when Channi was made CM after Amarinder Singh's resignation, but the party later lost the 2022 elections to the AAP.
Political analysts say that the ongoing feud reflects deeper organizational issues within the Punjab Congress. "Unless the high command takes a decisive step, the party may face another electoral setback," said a political commentator. The Congress has not yet announced a formal CM candidate, leaving room for further negotiations.
Impact on 2027 Polls
The internal rift could benefit the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal combine. With less than two years to go for the elections, the Congress is under pressure to present a united front. The high command's decision will be crucial in determining whether the party can mount a credible challenge to the AAP government led by Bhagwant Mann.
As the deadlock continues, both factions are waiting for a signal from Delhi. The Channi camp has made it clear that it will not accept Warring's leadership without a proper consultation process. Meanwhile, Warring's supporters argue that the party must look beyond caste and focus on winning the election.
