Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Ruled Out of Series Decider
India's young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not included in the playing XI for the fifth and final T20I against England at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on July 11, 2026. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Sooryavanshi sustained a left hamstring strain during a training session on the eve of the match.
The 20-year-old left-hander, who had made his T20I debut earlier in the series, was expected to play a key role in the series finale. However, the injury forced the team management to make a late change, with all-rounder Shivam Dube replacing him in the squad.
BCCI Medical Team Assessment
According to a BCCI statement, “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi complained of discomfort in his left hamstring after the practice session. The team's medical staff assessed him and advised rest as a precautionary measure. He will not take part in the fifth T20I.” The board further added that his progress will be monitored ahead of the upcoming ODI series against England.
Sooryavanshi had impressed in his brief stint in the series, scoring 45 runs in two innings at a strike rate of 150. His absence was a blow to India's batting depth, especially after the team had already lost opener Shubman Gill to a groin injury earlier in the tour.
Impact on Team Composition
With Sooryavanshi unavailable, India opted for an additional bowling option in Shivam Dube, who can also contribute with the bat. Dube had been on the fringes of the squad and this opportunity came as a result of the injury. The move allowed India to maintain a balanced XI, with five frontline bowlers and six batting options.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav, speaking at the toss, said, “It's unfortunate that Vaibhav had to miss out due to a niggle. He was in good form, but we have a strong squad and Shivam comes in with experience. We are confident of putting up a good show.”
Series Context
The fifth T20I was a dead rubber, with India having already sealed the series 3-1 after winning the previous three matches. England, however, were keen to finish on a high in front of their home crowd. The match marked the end of a closely contested T20I series that saw both teams experimenting with their line-ups.
Sooryavanshi's injury, though not serious, will be a concern for the Indian think tank as they prepare for the ODI series starting July 16. The BCCI is expected to provide an update on his fitness in the coming days.
