The Punjab government has officially declared a public holiday on May 26, 2026, in connection with the upcoming local body elections. This decision ensures that all eligible voters can exercise their franchise without any hindrance. As per the official notification, all state government offices, educational institutions, and local bodies will remain closed on the polling day.
Reason Behind the Holiday
The declaration aims to maximize voter turnout by removing work-related obstacles. The State Election Commission emphasized the importance of participation in grassroots democracy. Schools and colleges will also remain shut to allow students and staff to vote or assist in election duties.
What Will Remain Open?
Essential services such as hospitals, emergency services, and essential government functions will continue to operate. However, all non-essential government offices, including municipal corporations, zila parishads, and block offices, will be closed. Private institutions are also encouraged to grant leave to employees to enable voting.
The Punjab government has urged all citizens to come out and vote in large numbers to strengthen the democratic process at the local level.
