With the Punjab Assembly elections just months away, political parties have shifted into high gear, unveiling leadership changes, organizational overhauls, and voter-centric promises. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken the lead by finally delivering on its flagship 2022 pledge of direct financial assistance to women under the Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana. The scheme now covers nearly 36 lakh women beneficiaries at an annual cost of around Rs 1,400 crore, allowing AAP to assert that every major election promise has been fulfilled. At the same time, Arvind Kejriwal has hinted at the possibility of early elections while projecting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as the party's chief ministerial face.
Opposition Parties Restructure for Electoral Battle
The Congress party has retained Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as its Punjab unit chief while appointing former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as chairman of its campaign committee. This move aims to blend organizational cohesion with Channi's proven electoral appeal. The BJP, seeking to expand its rural and Sikh base, has appointed veteran Jat Sikh leader Kewal Singh Dhillon as state president. The party has also launched an intensive statewide campaign spearheaded by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), struggling for relevance after consecutive electoral defeats, is attempting a revival. Sukhbir Singh Badal has intensified grassroots outreach through the Punjab Bachao campaign, encouraged former leaders to return, and sought to reclaim the party's traditional Panthic constituency by raising religious and farmers' issues.
Campaign Focus on Welfare, Leadership, and Identity Politics
Punjab's election campaign has effectively begun, with welfare schemes, leadership projection, and identity politics dominating the discourse. However, voters are urged to look beyond pre-election optics. The real test, according to political analysts, is which party offers the most credible vision for governance, fiscal prudence, economic revival, and lasting social stability. As the electoral battle gathers pace, the coming months will reveal whether these promises translate into tangible outcomes for the state.
