Raghuvanshi family welcomes Meghalaya govt's SC appeal

The family of murdered Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi on Thursday expressed gratitude towards the Meghalaya government for filing an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to the prime accused, Sonam Raghuvanshi. The apex court is scheduled to hear the plea on Friday.

Family expresses fear of witness tampering and flight risk

Speaking to PTI, Raja’s elder brother Vipin Raghuvanshi voiced concerns that Sonam might influence witnesses or flee after being released on bail. "We thank the Meghalaya government for approaching the Supreme Court against Sonam's bail... We fear that Sonam, who is living in Shillong, may suddenly abscond after being released on bail," he said. He added, "We have full faith in the judiciary. We hope the truth will prevail."

Background of the case

Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested on June 9, 2025, from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on charges of conspiracy to murder her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. She had been in judicial custody at Shillong District Jail for over ten months before being granted bail by a lower court on April 27.

Meghalaya High Court’s earlier decision

On June 29, the Meghalaya High Court dismissed the state government’s petition seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam. Following this, the state government decided to move the Supreme Court, which will now hear the matter.
